Cornerstone Food Cupboard

Food Cupboard clients may come for food once a week on Tuesday or Saturday.  They will receive four pre-packed bags of food to provide food assistance. Clients should knock at the Cupboard door and will be checked off as receiving food.  They will receive four pre-packed bags of food containing:  nonperishable food items, frozen meat, produce, and bread/pastry.  New clients will be asked to register at the door.

The Food Cupboard is located at 3 Prospect Street in the back.

Because we provide clients with pre-packed bags of nonperishable foods, we have to limit the weight and size of food items. Thus, we ask for regular size food items instead of large or family size items or multi-pound items.  And we cannot put glass jars in the bags of food.

- The Cornerstone Food Cupboard Client’s Introduction -

VOLUNTEER STAFF

The Food Cupboard is run by a group of volunteers who are committed to contributing their time and energy to assist those in our communities who are in need of some extra help.

SOURCES OF FOOD

Much of the food we offer comes from Connecticut FoodShare, the food distribution center for food pantries and soup kitchens in our state. Connecticut FoodShare provides free food from the federal government and other food at significantly reduced prices that we can purchase with donated funds.

We also receive food donations from individuals, civic organizations, churches, and stores. And, of course, The Food Cupboard is a service of and is supported by the Cornerstone Foundation.

PURPOSE

The Food Cupboard provides food assistance to those needing some extra help who meet the federal guidelines for food assistance. We are not able to provide all the food a family/household may need, but we hope the food we can provide makes a difference.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to receive food from the Food Cupboard, a client must register by completing the Food Cupboard registration form. The form requires the following information:

1. Client’s name and address.

2. The total number of individuals living in the household and the following information about the household members.

  • The number of children (ages 0-17), adults (ages 18-59), and seniors (ages 60+) in the household

  • The number of males and females in the household

3.  Household Income:  The Federal Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) provides a significant amount of food to the Cupboard. Thus clients must attest that their household is eligible for food from the Cupboard because the maximum total income of their household is not more than is listed on the registration form for a household of their size.

Note that all Cupboard clients must be residents of Connecticut, and all clients must reregister each July per federal requirements.

The registration form is available at the Food Cupboard, or may be downloaded here:
